Lying with the back door open, The worlds seeps in, the air on our skin. Staring at the ceiling wondering, How its taken, all these weeks to carve some time, For the greenery that helps us breath again, The greenery that makes our mind expand. It’s our animal instinct. Animal instinct. Treading on the forest floor, You feel the cool leaves, the damp seeds. Gazing through the endless trees, The many creatures there must be, Living in the greenery that helps us breath again, The greenery that makes our mind expand. It’s our animal instinct. Animal instinct. Animal instinct. Animal instinct. Take a seat down by the stream, Listen carefully, you’ll hear the birds singing. It took a while to feel in tune, with the quiet breeze, Like we’re meant to be, Here among the greenery that helps us breath again, The greenery that makes our mind expand. It’s our animal instinct. Animal instinct. Animal instinct. Animal instinct. Time to pack our things again, But I could stay amongst the greenery.

Sometimes I fall lightly down, Sometimes I fall, crash to the ground. Even when I might see so clearly, The hazard that lies ahead, Even when I might know it’s all show, Somehow I get stuck, When all I needed was to get back up. Maybe we fall because we jumped too high, Maybe we fall for no reason at all. Even when you do the things you’re told to, The stars just don’t align, Even when you know at 7 years old, Somehow you’ll be brave, Someday you’ll be free of all this, Someone then might say, That all you needed was to get back up. Even when we believe we’re worthy, Of everything that we dream, Even when we know we’re beautiful and bold, Somehow we shut down, Somewhere lose our way, Someone please just say, That all we ever need is to get back up.

How far can the heart stretch before the seams start to unthread. For how long can the heart twist and make space for the pain of others before it cracks, bursts, shuts down. Compassion fatigue. When you're seeing that many people in a place of need, there comes a point where you have to put up a wall, and choose not to care, because you know that you're one call away from it breaking you.

Darkness falls through the window. Morning strikes it's sword, feel it puncture. Give away your hand, they pull you under. Patience wearing thin, it's not your blunder. Sympathy, empathy, lock them away to protect the spark. Cause a rolling stone can gather no moss, So you're told, it's how it goes. Well a rolling stone can gather no moss, So you're told, it's how it goes. Setting sun, on a purple bed. Changing winds, take your exit. Leave your hero behind, there’s nothing left to save. Was your duty of care, no-one saw your, Sympathy, empathy, lock them away to protect the spark. Cause a rolling stone can gather no moss, So you're told, it's how it goes, Well a rolling stone can gather no moss, So they say, it's all at bay. Cause a rolling stone can gather no moss, So you're told, it's how it goes, Well a rolling stone can gather no moss, So you're told, it's how it goes.

She gave me a ring She gave me a reason She knew that the time would come When a voice inside would say It’s time to stop It’s time to give up It’s time to let go Your time is up She gave me a ring She gave me the resilience I need To stand up there along open So nobody knows I’m broken If it’s time to stop If it’s time to give up If it’s time to let go Surely I’d know She gave me a ring She knew i had good reasons To give my heart away with each and every rhyme To share the joy I know shouldn’t be just mine So it’s not time to stop So it’s not time to give up And it’s not time to let go My time must not be up She gave me a ring She gave me a reason

Another circle, another new birth. She’s dancing on the clouds. She’s up there floating, she’s up there healing. This precious fleeting life. Oh take this moment and breathe it in. Oh take tomorrow like, an extra gift. Oh the ones that gone and the newly born oh, the proof is this, Oh take today like you mean it. Another Circle, another new turn. It’s never the right time. To start something new, to end something good. This precious fleeting life. Oh take this moment and breathe it in. Oh take tomorrow like, an extra gift. Oh the ones that gone and the newly born oh, the proof is this, Oh take today like you mean it. Oh this today like you mean it. Another Circle, another full turn.

about

FULL TURN by FETHERSTONE

Full Turn is a jazz-inspired folk album of 5 songs and 5 interludes, written by Briana Cowlishaw, co-produced and mixed by Briana Cowlishaw and Matilda Abraham.

The interludes and watercolours accompanying the album expand on the stories and sense of place in each song. They are intended to be absorbed with a present mind, open heart and to make you feel.

I hope you enjoy the series as much as I enjoyed making it.

Bri (aka Fetherstone)

BEHIND THE SONGS

1 greenery (interlude) -> 2 Animal Instinct
This interlude and song were inspired by a trip to the Blue Mountains in a mini-van, sleeping beneath the trees and feeling completely at peace. It’s about tuning into nature and slowing down the pace of life.

3 spinning (interlude) -> 4 Sometimes We Fall -> 5 corridor music for the brave hearted (interlude)
These two interludes and main track investigate themes of resilience, grief and hope. It was inspired by a day at the Sydney Children’s Hospital for my Music Therapy placement, and the sense of perspective I gained being surrounded by a very sick and very brave 7-year-old.

6 compassion fatigue (interlude) -> 7 Gather No Moss
The song and introductory poem were written to explore how compassion fatigue can affect paramedics. My partner's experiences working in London and Sydney made me question how sustainable it is to give away endless amounts of empathy.

8 She Gave Me A Ring
This piece was written about the challenges of wearing your heart on your sleeve as an artist and riding the vulnerability hangover (as Brene Brown puts it) and sometimes existential crisis that come with performing and putting yourself out there.

9 rebirth (interlude) -> 10 Another Full Turn
This interlude and track reflect on the cycles of life. They simultaneously hold space for the grief of loss and the pure joy of greeting a new baby (in my case, the loss of my beautiful cousin and the birth of my niece).
